Finding the Right Path to Employment: How long does it really take to get a job?

For anyone, job searching can feel overwhelming. The traditional pathways like sending out countless applications, attending interviews, and waiting for responses - this can be exhausting, especially for young neurodivergent people .

At EquallyU, we take a different approach. We know that every person’s journey is unique, which is why we provide a 12-week one-on-one coaching program, offering four hours of support each week (split across two sessions). This structure allows us to move at the individual’s pace and focus on building confidence and skills step by step.

How long does it take to find a job?

This is one of the most common questions we’re asked we wish there was but there’s no single answer. It depends on a number of factors, such as:

  • Self-awareness: How well do you (or any young job seeker) know their strengths, skills, and preferred work environments?
  • Previous experience: Have you had the chance to try out different workplaces before?
  • Support needs: What kind of guidance and coaching will help you succeed? We tailor our supports to each individual with a highly customised approach.
  • Industry choice: Some industries are more accessible than others, and it’s important to find the right job match between your skills and the opportunities available. If there are gaps, we help you identify them and then work on filling them.

As you can see, the timeframe is different for everyone. What matters most is ensuring the person is job-ready and set up for long-term success.  By minimising negative experiences or being the support to guide through that experience maximises the chance of success.

We can help you identify and fill your knowledge gaps around employment, teach you how to self advocate and provide the support - a soft place to land; and make the connections that you need. But then its up to you; you need to front up and fulfill the rest of process and be a good employee by being the best that you can be. That - we cant do for you.

Building skills in real workplaces

One of the most effective ways to prepare for employment is through hands-on, supported experience. Right now, we’re running a program at the 5 star Hotel, where young people build skills in a supportive and inclusive workplace. For those interested in hospitality, it’s a fantastic way to explore the industry, gain confidence, and see what the day-to-day reality looks like.
